Northwest Territories automobile registration and territory-issued plates are believed to have begun in 1941. N.W.T. was "CANADA'S NORTHLAND" from 1954 through 1969, and the 1966-69 issue featured the territorial coat-of-arms. But Northwest Territories' most famous and enduring design has been their plates cut out in the shape of a polar bear, used since 1970. The current issue of plates began in 2010.
